In 2005, BMW 3 series became BMW’s best selling model. Taking closer look to this series, there are five generations that signal tremendous improvements and changes. Each generation introduces each body styles but overall, the 328i belongs to a compact executive car.

The first generation of BMW 3 series is E21. In details, E21 was created as two-door model and introduces new design concept. The visible new design is seen through the center console angled towards the driver. Surely, this has become the famous philosophy of BMW’s interior design for years. E21 offered several models like 1.6 liter, 1.8 liter, and 2.0 liter versions with M10 4 cylinder engine. Later on the new six-cylinder M20 engine was added continued with 1.6 liter M10 engine.

The second generation belongs to BMW 3 series family is E30. It is available in two-door sedan, two-door convertible, four-door saloon, and two-door touring. The models in this series include a six cylinder engine 325e. However, the model of 325i then joined the lineup by offering several latest BMW’s standard features, like BMW sports seats, full electrics package, black roof-liner, front 2” valance spoiler, BMW ”iS” rear slip, 14-inch BBS wheels, and Close Ratio gearbox. The new diesel engine became the new addition to E30 family that carried 1.8, 2.0, or 2,5 liter engine. But the strongest engine comes with S14 straight coupled a 4-valve head.

Go further to the third generation of BMW 3 series, it is E36 that was created to gain the equal success with E30 by making upgrade with Z-axle multilink suspension. The layouts include front engine and rear-wheel drive, whereas the body styles come in two-door coupe, two-door convertible, four-door saloon, and 5-door touring.

Furthermore, the fourth generation came as E46. Similar to previous generations, E46 is also compact executive car. The models of five-door touring and two-door coupe were equipped with streptonic semi-automatic transmission, the transmission that is available in all models of BMW 3 series. The following model to be introduced later was two-door convertible. The great thing about E46 platform is that it is elected to be the 10 Best Cars in Car and Driver Magazine.

The next generation, fifth generation, is E90/E91/E92/E93 with front engine, rear-wheel driver and all wheel-driver. The improvement conducted toward this model including the transmission, engines, passenger compartment, suspension technology and high-tech features and options. The main features offered through this model are Active Cruise Control, Comfort Access, bi-xenon adaptive headlamps, and Active Steering. The changes also conducted over headlights, grille, trunk, and taillight.

The twelve engine is the one integrated to this generation, as well as other enhancement that make use of latest technology innovation like Valvetronic, electric water pump, Double-VANOS, and a 15% increase in fuel economy.
